<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Saturday November 19 was a beautiful day for late Autumn. The sun was shining and it was 15 degrees Celsius, very warm for this time of year. I was at my home in the country and looking at my garden when I was surprised to see this beautiful little flower blooming among the fallen leaves. A tiny last splash of colour before the arrival of the snow and bleak white days of winter. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BPCudl7lMes/WDO02K7P-qI/AAAAAAAAHC4/_rwxv4OkDHEsFSETnu_3aIpVGvTKrACYwCLcB/s1600/P1000567a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BPCudl7lMes/WDO02K7P-qI/AAAAAAAAHC4/_rwxv4OkDHEsFSETnu_3aIpVGvTKrACYwCLcB/s320/P1000567a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then I found another pretty little flower - one of my hardy yellow daisies. What brave little lovelies these last flowers are! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BQa_rfTMZx4/WDO075r8fHI/AAAAAAAAHC8/ob2eAcjEYe8NMzEUuQdGTM_r1b_xRr3YwCLcB/s1600/P1000569a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BQa_rfTMZx4/WDO075r8fHI/AAAAAAAAHC8/ob2eAcjEYe8NMzEUuQdGTM_r1b_xRr3YwCLcB/s320/P1000569a.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I went back to Ottawa that evening and the next day it started to snow. At first it was just very wet and melted on everything. As I was walking down a street in my neighbourhood, I saw this beautiful little rose bud. It was even more lovely for being so ephemeral. It will never open into a flower because several hours later, it got really cold and snowed in earnest. By nightfall, everything was covered in thick white snow and the temperatures were well below zero. Goodbye pretty little last flowers of the year! Your delicate beauty and your brave show before the long cold dark of winter was a wonderful gift. </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-79481460606001260092016-10-19T19:16:00.001-07:002016-10-19T19:29:42.171-07:00FEH's Fall Frolic<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Last Saturday, October 15, the members of <b>FEH</b> (<b>F</b>ran, <b>E</b>vlyn, and <b>H</b>olly) met to see if we could do a site-specific installation somewhere along the spit in Grenville, Quebec - which is across the Ottawa River from Hawkesbury Ontario. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oCO-UhF_rlg/WAggPbItp8I/AAAAAAAAG9A/VxLOa8Rr9CgMp6VfrP_D8_OXxrWZmNaVwCLcB/s1600/P1000520a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oCO-UhF_rlg/WAggPbItp8I/AAAAAAAAG9A/VxLOa8Rr9CgMp6VfrP_D8_OXxrWZmNaVwCLcB/s320/P1000520a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It was an absolutely glorious Fall day and the Autumn colours of the trees were at their peak. The sky was a rich blue, the air was fresh, and it was truly inspiring to look at everything as a canvas for a FEH project. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VkQNIPmRArg/WAggcjub3FI/AAAAAAAAG9E/o9kt4tL3TZIZmzSJNiX66LoECG2SXHIygCLcB/s1600/P1000515.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VkQNIPmRArg/WAggcjub3FI/AAAAAAAAG9E/o9kt4tL3TZIZmzSJNiX66LoECG2SXHIygCLcB/s320/P1000515.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There were some delicious scenes along our walk, like this one, looking out toward the Ottawa River. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NyYaYFV5CAg/WAggkpWUfXI/AAAAAAAAG9I/rUWO2k4JfDgJIOUUuiObHsnjB_QoWp0jACLcB/s1600/P1000525a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NyYaYFV5CAg/WAggkpWUfXI/AAAAAAAAG9I/rUWO2k4JfDgJIOUUuiObHsnjB_QoWp0jACLcB/s320/P1000525a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">... or like this one, looking at the reds in the trees on the Quebec shore. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HnciaExdeJM/WAggrcK7BPI/AAAAAAAAG9M/wgDLFZGhmI8HdIrVVStDAgHXyCISC4_5ACLcB/s1600/P1000531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HnciaExdeJM/WAggrcK7BPI/AAAAAAAAG9M/wgDLFZGhmI8HdIrVVStDAgHXyCISC4_5ACLcB/s320/P1000531.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The walk along the spit took us all the way to the bridge that crosses from Hawkesbury to Grenville. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-iBsDnxXEs/WAgg2HLXtCI/AAAAAAAAG9Q/Y9urt2AQmsAeUaSsszpiKkMyUo8CiiyWgCLcB/s1600/P1000537a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r-iBsDnxXEs/WAgg2HLXtCI/AAAAAAAAG9Q/Y9urt2AQmsAeUaSsszpiKkMyUo8CiiyWgCLcB/s320/P1000537a.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then we spotted this interesting little bush, with a halo of branches fanning out, bare except for the one leaf each branch had on its end. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BWiFddnHz9g/WAgg7k6Du0I/AAAAAAAAG9U/mKZikt5WqdcvgsAeFN7hvz5Z_oDjRngFACLcB/s1600/P1000538a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BWiFddnHz9g/WAgg7k6Du0I/AAAAAAAAG9U/mKZikt5WqdcvgsAeFN7hvz5Z_oDjRngFACLcB/s320/P1000538a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We decided to weave and wrap some Fall flora into this little bush, but carefully so as not to disturb the effect of the branches sticking up. We used vines and sumac leaves and fall flowers (especially aster) and any other bits and bobs of colour we could find. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jyb_hYMHb60/WAgqTWt2h3I/AAAAAAAAG-E/v5iQImse5XkqzmFcWiUVx4rKiS9Ag0M7ACLcB/s1600/P1000541a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jyb_hYMHb60/WAgqTWt2h3I/AAAAAAAAG-E/v5iQImse5XkqzmFcWiUVx4rKiS9Ag0M7ACLcB/s320/P1000541a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When we were finished, the little bush looked like an Autumn floral extravaganza. It was really quite lovely! And we were pleased to see that the bees liked it too - they were busy with all the flowers we had woven into the bush. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6f49EHF3Ed0/WAghfsW2w5I/AAAAAAAAG9g/4Y4Gvb8TL9ky3jM9yWqMHFo-4IN7GPi5ACLcB/s1600/P1000549a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6f49EHF3Ed0/WAghfsW2w5I/AAAAAAAAG9g/4Y4Gvb8TL9ky3jM9yWqMHFo-4IN7GPi5ACLcB/s320/P1000549a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then we signed it, using green ferns. It was hard to keep the letters F, E, and H in place because the wind kept blowing the ferns away. But we persevered! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZuBTtzIKUYk/WAghpEUjqvI/AAAAAAAAG9k/dG7UFxuUb8M7k78Qa7YS1jOOZSmcADGlgCLcB/s1600/P1000544a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZuBTtzIKUYk/WAghpEUjqvI/AAAAAAAAG9k/dG7UFxuUb8M7k78Qa7YS1jOOZSmcADGlgCLcB/s320/P1000544a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We were also inspired by a nearly vertical earth bank to create another installation. So we decided to make a face. We used a couple of flat grey stones for eyes, with darker stones for the pupils, and pieces of sumac leaves for the eyelashes. We used a wonderfully-shaped stick for the nose. And, of course, red sumac leaves for the mouth. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hO4H6T4oIqE/WAghtYWIxrI/AAAAAAAAG9o/pybQgOpdP6E2HRwOxi412j-7zfllKNmPwCLcB/s1600/P1000545a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hO4H6T4oIqE/WAghtYWIxrI/AAAAAAAAG9o/pybQgOpdP6E2HRwOxi412j-7zfllKNmPwCLcB/s320/P1000545a.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We also added some vines for hair and a branch to define the chin. Voila! a Fall face! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aFn-BtrVepo/WAghy8d3FLI/AAAAAAAAG9s/Sl7GckTHD4gew1iEhTIxSLV30JFPpuUQQCLcB/s1600/P1000547a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aFn-BtrVepo/WAghy8d3FLI/AAAAAAAAG9s/Sl7GckTHD4gew1iEhTIxSLV30JFPpuUQQCLcB/s320/P1000547a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And then we signed this piece as well, using some red sticks. (As Holly said, it is a good thing none of us has a name that begins with an "S") </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Altogether a really satisfying day for FEH. And a great way to enjoy a nearly perfect Autumn day!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-70043257957957594922016-08-01T19:13:00.000-07:002016-08-01T19:13:09.342-07:00Doing Tourist-y Things in Toronto<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lGWrURHA8PQ/V5_-F37QrmI/AAAAAAAAGqw/PvCgBap1APUbcDyjBPB7usR3xGqm7cZ9gCLcB/s1600/Toronto%2Bscene%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lGWrURHA8PQ/V5_-F37QrmI/AAAAAAAAGqw/PvCgBap1APUbcDyjBPB7usR3xGqm7cZ9gCLcB/s320/Toronto%2Bscene%2B3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On July 23rd, my brother Paul had a significant birthday (his 70th). My sister and I went to Toronto to celebrate with him. My sister came from Winnipeg and I came from Ottawa, so it was a pretty important visit - it is rare for all 3 of us to get together. We spent several days wining and dining and wandering around the city. My brother decided he wanted to do what all the tourists do and take pictures of us at City Hall in front of the big "TORONTO" sign. So that's what we did. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xkOdRFH6ewM/V5_-P1v0ggI/AAAAAAAAGq0/4W49OnjshrYRHg_-WPnnh_ZAhgByk3vSwCLcB/s1600/Toronto%2Bscene%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xkOdRFH6ewM/V5_-P1v0ggI/AAAAAAAAGq0/4W49OnjshrYRHg_-WPnnh_ZAhgByk3vSwCLcB/s320/Toronto%2Bscene%2B2.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It really was a popular place. Lots of people milling about, posing and taking pictures. Paul got pictures of me and my sister, Marilyn, from many different angles. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AXkCGdPaq-8/V5_-WibquRI/AAAAAAAAGq4/sRp407y0XBoPYoO5abFHWp8zrJedHXk1QCLcB/s1600/Toronto%2Bscene%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AXkCGdPaq-8/V5_-WibquRI/AAAAAAAAGq4/sRp407y0XBoPYoO5abFHWp8zrJedHXk1QCLcB/s320/Toronto%2Bscene%2B4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And of course we had to do what all tourist do and took a selfie! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-woCPCSlP-uA/V5_-ZK2uN0I/AAAAAAAAGq8/5ycIhoEek10DWAvkUQZhOSwa0oQt1T8-wCLcB/s1600/Toronto%2Bscene%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-woCPCSlP-uA/V5_-ZK2uN0I/AAAAAAAAGq8/5ycIhoEek10DWAvkUQZhOSwa0oQt1T8-wCLcB/s320/Toronto%2Bscene%2B1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is one of my favourites because the arches made such a great background. In the winter this is a rink and people skate around here and under the arches, which are all lit up. But the day this picture was taken it was really hot and we were enjoying the weather like all the other tourists! Silly but fun!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-5544980275105497262016-04-25T20:09:00.000-07:002016-04-25T20:09:08.687-07:00FEH's Glorious Spring 2016 Debut<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GSudvZpj_AA/Vx7SNs4mLcI/AAAAAAAAFYQ/TfC60Ms_7YIMh9dCe47uJUinuQVqzhHhwCLcB/s1600/P1000347.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GSudvZpj_AA/Vx7SNs4mLcI/AAAAAAAAFYQ/TfC60Ms_7YIMh9dCe47uJUinuQVqzhHhwCLcB/s320/P1000347.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last Saturday, it was a glorious spring day in Eastern Ontario - sunny and warm, with a lovely fresh breeze. Fran and Holly and I (FEH) decided to create our first on-site installation of the year. We went to Voyageur Park, just east of Hawkesbury and walked along the road, enjoying the views of creeks swollen and rushing from the spring melt. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FWXzoUlwpag/Vx7STsz4hNI/AAAAAAAAFYU/HGw7mqU4hAE8YbQXp-2hkEXX03Zh2reJgCLcB/s1600/P1000351a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FWXzoUlwpag/Vx7STsz4hNI/AAAAAAAAFYU/HGw7mqU4hAE8YbQXp-2hkEXX03Zh2reJgCLcB/s320/P1000351a.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We decided to create our work on the beach. During the summer, this would be impossible because the beaches are packed with people. But in the spring, the park is nearly empty and we had the beach all to ourselves. Our plan was to do self-portraits in the sand. We drew our portraits then decorated them with all the found materials we gathered nearby. This is Fran's terrific portrait, with moss and stones and branches and seeds and all sorts of wonderful bits and bobs. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mlBGr65pKqY/Vx7SYwirNuI/AAAAAAAAFYY/k7fURCtg-7I311UMBUA6T1Z-AgOIsywJgCLcB/s1600/P1000352a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mlBGr65pKqY/Vx7SYwirNuI/AAAAAAAAFYY/k7fURCtg-7I311UMBUA6T1Z-AgOIsywJgCLcB/s320/P1000352a.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is my portrait. I spent just about all my time creating my hair out of pine cones and had minimal decoration elsewhere - just a few stones and some sticks. But the hair really works - it looks like my hair really does. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zux0W-c12B8/Vx7SeOeHIjI/AAAAAAAAFYc/RYsTTuqBUkkSi4A36W2j8m-8G6FOtsBUACLcB/s1600/P1000354a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zux0W-c12B8/Vx7SeOeHIjI/AAAAAAAAFYc/RYsTTuqBUkkSi4A36W2j8m-8G6FOtsBUACLcB/s320/P1000354a.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is Holly's wonderful self-portrait. She made this marvelous hat with bits of moss and wood and seeds and feathers. What fun!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All three portraits comprised a triptych - with Fran's (F) on the left, mine (E) in the middle, and Holly's (H) on the right. The portrait of FEH. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was hard to get a good picture of all three together. Especially for short little me. It would have been nice if we could have climbed a tree to get the proper camera angle, but of course that was impossible. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H6WzdetyRcY/Vx7SzOoZiyI/AAAAAAAAFYs/RifZXqr07-gU5EdgJ2d3wvpvUNdrTI2_wCLcB/s1600/P1000359.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H6WzdetyRcY/Vx7SzOoZiyI/AAAAAAAAFYs/RifZXqr07-gU5EdgJ2d3wvpvUNdrTI2_wCLcB/s320/P1000359.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We took a lot of pictures anyway. At one point I saw Holly taking pics in one direction and Fran in the other, which I thought made a funny shot. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-viniMWGVj84/Vx7TMDOVFTI/AAAAAAAAFY0/yniPApEg-0gU0wukfe4-vFnKR5u0swgaACLcB/s1600/P1000365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-viniMWGVj84/Vx7TMDOVFTI/AAAAAAAAFY0/yniPApEg-0gU0wukfe4-vFnKR5u0swgaACLcB/s320/P1000365.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I made one final addition to my self-portrait before we declared the work finished. I really wanted to add more decoration, so put some pieces of bark down to create texture. There! That's better. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-paGVJbzBduM/Vx7TRtoLXjI/AAAAAAAAFY4/fQ-S4VzzneElZMu3Mp8i00pHbSAW8fvWQCLcB/s1600/P1000368.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-paGVJbzBduM/Vx7TRtoLXjI/AAAAAAAAFY4/fQ-S4VzzneElZMu3Mp8i00pHbSAW8fvWQCLcB/s320/P1000368.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then we decided to take a pic of our shadows as we stood over our self-portraits. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uoNjpmulKJg/Vx7TX1qvtEI/AAAAAAAAFZA/QYDWek4yhh8AUW8DdYkhZGAXlQRcnm4LACLcB/s1600/P1000371a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uoNjpmulKJg/Vx7TX1qvtEI/AAAAAAAAFZA/QYDWek4yhh8AUW8DdYkhZGAXlQRcnm4LACLcB/s320/P1000371a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On our walk back through the park, we saw a lot of pretty scenes like this. No leaves on the trees yet, but you could feel life returning and plants waking up and the promise of the season to come. A great day for beginnings! </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-19104930810004511552016-03-20T20:16:00.000-07:002016-03-20T20:16:28.060-07:00Wonderful Water in the Springtime <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cSjvKYWyIOk/Vu9gUI0l_6I/AAAAAAAAFXc/5PwrOsoVJaEtk9bxLH22rSZsOQdU8Dwcg/s1600/2cdd83a4-3968-4844-81a5-e3fd270828f7_a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cSjvKYWyIOk/Vu9gUI0l_6I/AAAAAAAAFXc/5PwrOsoVJaEtk9bxLH22rSZsOQdU8Dwcg/s320/2cdd83a4-3968-4844-81a5-e3fd270828f7_a.jpg" width="179" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the most wonderful things about the advent of spring is the sight and sound of running water after months of bitter cold during which water was frozen as snow and ice. On a warm day recently, the snow on the roof of my house really started to melt and sent this steady stream of water down a pipe to land on the thawing ground below. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lbPMukQQZSo/Vu9hFYfn5JI/AAAAAAAAFXk/lEP4vf9p0WwA75j3PS0ZpxQUBMKSFohwQ/s1600/85e24f25-92b1-4cb7-9fc6-884b3f5569c0_a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lbPMukQQZSo/Vu9hFYfn5JI/AAAAAAAAFXk/lEP4vf9p0WwA75j3PS0ZpxQUBMKSFohwQ/s320/85e24f25-92b1-4cb7-9fc6-884b3f5569c0_a.jpg" width="179" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another sign of Spring for me is when the snow and ice melt in a small farm pond down the road from my house in the country, creating this rushing waterfall. There are still icicles on the tree branches but they won't last long. The sound of the gushing water is like beautiful Spring music!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zCTHtUDNjaY/Vu9hdCfvHnI/AAAAAAAAFXo/O_cbbdn1VZweo5wBa5_0bsP0XuDCEnMmg/s1600/9a092afe-38f4-4edd-8307-7854e21c9167_a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zCTHtUDNjaY/Vu9hdCfvHnI/AAAAAAAAFXo/O_cbbdn1VZweo5wBa5_0bsP0XuDCEnMmg/s320/9a092afe-38f4-4edd-8307-7854e21c9167_a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When I walk across the bridge from Ottawa to Gatineau every day, I watch the steady progress of the ice breaking up on the river below. The ice formations have been amazing, with great cracks and fissures - like something from an antarctic landscape. But water is now visible in places and there are large open patches of water, as can be seen in the distance. The transformation from ice to water at this time of year always feels like a miracle. Hooray for Spring!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-57454421359630704242016-02-24T19:47:00.000-08:002016-02-24T19:47:25.097-08:00Doing Selfies - My Way!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AZTqGdx7pHI/Vs5x88zC7lI/AAAAAAAAFWg/kLOqujgLOtc/s1600/img413a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AZTqGdx7pHI/Vs5x88zC7lI/AAAAAAAAFWg/kLOqujgLOtc/s320/img413a.jpg" width="215" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I keep a small sketch pad on the coffee table beside the couch where I curl up in the evening. From time to time, I draw in this sketchbook - all sorts of things - ideas, things I have seen, flowers, whatever. And, since there is a mirror nearby, sometimes I end up just sketching myself, doing quick "selfies". They are not like the selfies that people take with their cameras and cell phones - these are quick doodles using whatever drawing tools I have at hand. For example, this super quick selfie was done with black marker. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NGbjneM2_1c/Vs5yAg-Gz_I/AAAAAAAAFWk/vts4o8Lv5ug/s1600/img414a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NGbjneM2_1c/Vs5yAg-Gz_I/AAAAAAAAFWk/vts4o8Lv5ug/s320/img414a.jpg" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This selfie was done with coloured markers but, as you can see, I was wearing a black sweater at the time. These sketches are not intended to be finished drawings but they are fun in the evening when I don't want to do anything too serious. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0YsQL-30w2E/Vs5yEAiVqAI/AAAAAAAAFWo/xKVQEeLpukQ/s1600/img415.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0YsQL-30w2E/Vs5yEAiVqAI/AAAAAAAAFWo/xKVQEeLpukQ/s320/img415.jpg" width="215" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This selfie was a real experiment. I had bought some watercolour markers so I tried them out. I drew with the markers and then used a wet brush to get a watercolour effect. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mLo_kiS2qrc/Vs5yHBG4EbI/AAAAAAAAFWs/vRxDJ0-avZA/s1600/img416.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mLo_kiS2qrc/Vs5yHBG4EbI/AAAAAAAAFWs/vRxDJ0-avZA/s320/img416.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This selfie was also an experiment. I had some oil pastels that looked like crayons and wanted to try them out. One of the fun things about drawing your selfies instead of using a camera is that you can make yourself look any way you like. I don't have yellow hair but I felt like being a blond the evening I drew this. Why not!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RtvAWKstZwk/Vs5yKZ1prOI/AAAAAAAAFWw/cfeIuTGzovc/s1600/img417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RtvAWKstZwk/Vs5yKZ1prOI/AAAAAAAAFWw/cfeIuTGzovc/s320/img417.jpg" width="215" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Back to coloured markers. This was a very fast sketch and I would have fiddled around with it more, but it was getting late and I had to get to bed. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I never set out to do a bunch of selfies but it just turned out that I was the handiest subject some evenings when I felt like doodling. But when I went through my sketchbook recently and realized I had a bunch of them, I thought "What fun! I have been doing selfies - my way!"</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-28370619394258343022015-11-22T20:05:00.000-08:002015-11-22T20:05:07.288-08:00An Afternoon at the National Art Gallery<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U5kbIaf6jao/VlKDT0Vk9pI/AAAAAAAAFUs/XwIkLc977oo/s1600/P1000311a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U5kbIaf6jao/VlKDT0Vk9pI/AAAAAAAAFUs/XwIkLc977oo/s320/P1000311a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are a couple of new shows at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa and I spent a happy afternoon there, checking them out. One of the shows is about a group of paintings Monet produced during an early part of his career. They were really interesting and some of them were very beautiful. People were not allowed to take pictures in this show, but I did take a shot of the entryway, with a big portrait of Monet himself at the entrance, and a large copy of one of his paintings overhead (and a rather tired-looking guard leaning against the wall on the right!). </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mUrix0w2uHM/VlKDcoDIS8I/AAAAAAAAFUw/VV2cxclJRGQ/s1600/P1000313b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mUrix0w2uHM/VlKDcoDIS8I/AAAAAAAAFUw/VV2cxclJRGQ/s320/P1000313b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The other show is called "Beauty's Awakening" and consists of a large collection of drawings that were recently donated to the National. This large poster of one of the drawings was hanging near the entrance to this show. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-147c5pnMVc8/VlKDh-CVrEI/AAAAAAAAFU0/mepj75Q2eKI/s1600/P1000303a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-147c5pnMVc8/VlKDh-CVrEI/AAAAAAAAFU0/mepj75Q2eKI/s320/P1000303a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The public is allowed to take photos in this show so I took some pics of drawings I really liked. This is a drawing by the pre-Raphaelite artist, Edward Burne Jones. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IyhBVntUyrY/VlKDmYtG3FI/AAAAAAAAFU4/4Jt7TMqrVY4/s1600/P1000307a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IyhBVntUyrY/VlKDmYtG3FI/AAAAAAAAFU4/4Jt7TMqrVY4/s320/P1000307a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a beautiful drawing (I didn't make of note of the artist's name). Seeing these drawings really made me want to pick up my charcoal and start sketching again. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w2IzJPK4CNg/VlKDujPyAjI/AAAAAAAAFVA/b-zxsv-WEjo/s1600/P1000309a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w2IzJPK4CNg/VlKDujPyAjI/AAAAAAAAFVA/b-zxsv-WEjo/s320/P1000309a.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">William Holman Hunt drew this sensitive portrait of his second wife, the sister of his first wife, who had died. It sounds like they had a difficult life at first, but this drawing shows how much he must have loved her. Beautiful! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hKVBJ-dylxY/VlKEIMSNeHI/AAAAAAAAFVI/4POnMKSDLWA/s1600/P1000302a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hKVBJ-dylxY/VlKEIMSNeHI/AAAAAAAAFVI/4POnMKSDLWA/s320/P1000302a.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After an hour or so looking at the many lovely drawings in the "Beauty's Awakening" show, I wandered into another part of the National. Across the hall were the galleries with contemporary art. Wow! What a complete change of pace. This bold sculpture struck my eye as soon as I walked in the door. The top part has what looks like car parts inside and the white base is an old freezer! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yu0oNpRKlBo/VlKELUs0ioI/AAAAAAAAFVQ/8cJJqnBCHXE/s1600/P1000300a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yu0oNpRKlBo/VlKELUs0ioI/AAAAAAAAFVQ/8cJJqnBCHXE/s320/P1000300a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This room has a huge piece that covers a whole wall. The images are very provocative when you get close to them. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z122tHzr_5E/VlKEfirZ18I/AAAAAAAAFVY/i-D-ZtnbsjU/s1600/P1000306a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z122tHzr_5E/VlKEfirZ18I/AAAAAAAAFVY/i-D-ZtnbsjU/s320/P1000306a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then I wandered back in time a bit and found this Henry Moore sculpture in a part of the gallery with mid 20th century British artists. Moore's people always look like they just sat down, leaned back, and don't intend to ever get up again. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fQ3wi01H-e4/VlKEnP9WvmI/AAAAAAAAFVg/BXIFm744PNY/s1600/P1000305a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fQ3wi01H-e4/VlKEnP9WvmI/AAAAAAAAFVg/BXIFm744PNY/s320/P1000305a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the things I like about going to big art galleries like the National is that you really can time-travel there. My afternoon had started in the late nineteenth century, jumped to the present day, then wandered back to the mid-twentieth century, then back even further to the Romantic period. It really was refreshing to the eyes and mind to see all these products of artists from various times and places and to see them all so beautifully presented. Truly a delightful afternoon! </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-65893430493450904592015-10-14T18:16:00.001-07:002015-10-14T18:24:51.414-07:00Thanksgiving Al Fresco<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Monday October 12 was Thanksgiving Day, and it was an unusually warm one. It got up to about 23 degrees Celsius, which is almost summer-like weather for this time of year. I went to my friends', Mac and Brenda's, for Thanksgiving dinner. It was so beautiful that we decided to eat outside, al fresco. Margaret and John were also there, and Margaret took this picture just before the main course. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was so warm I was wearing sandals. I can't remember the last time I was able to wear sandals on Thanksgiving!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took this picture of Mac and Brenda's driveway. The light is amazing at this time of year!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After dinner, we had coffee and pumpkin pie (Yum!). I took this pic of Brenda, Mac, John and Margaret (and Betty the dog), still enjoying being outdoors, even though the afternoon was waning and it was starting to feel chilly. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Margaret explored Brenda's garden and took this picture. When she sent it to me, she called it "Secret Garden". It really does look like a secret place! Great shot, Margaret. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The sun started to set and it really began to feel like Autumn, with the tree branches starting to look bare and the browns and golds and reds everywhere. A beautiful day!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last Saturday (September 26th), the members of <b>FEH</b> - that is, <b>F</b>ran, <b>E</b>vlyn (me) and <b>H</b>olly - got together to explore the possibility of creating one of our site-specific installations in the woods somewhere, as we have been doing for a couple of years now. The last time we did this was very early in the Summer, and now here we were, hoping to do one last one this year before it got too cold. We went to Hudson, Quebec to try a different venue (most of our installations in the past have been at Voyageur Park). It was a beautiful, clear, sunny day - perfect for a walk in the park by the river, looking for a good site and for some good ideas.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9NhYeFkodgI/Vg3i4vlwFRI/AAAAAAAAFSM/_6k1rMUseQo/s1600/P1000222.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9NhYeFkodgI/Vg3i4vlwFRI/AAAAAAAAFSM/_6k1rMUseQo/s320/P1000222.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We ended up on a sandy beach but still didn't have any ideas. However, it was such a nice day we decided just to enjoy the sun and the emerging Fall colours and the lovely view. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ffGG6bsiC1w/Vg3i93szp8I/AAAAAAAAFSU/VzbqJOe-ts8/s1600/P1000210.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ffGG6bsiC1w/Vg3i93szp8I/AAAAAAAAFSU/VzbqJOe-ts8/s320/P1000210.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was lots to see and enjoy. We were lucky to spot this big Blue Heron among the Canada Geese swimming and plunging down for something to eat. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L9oIEixBKRk/Vg3jE0xGBNI/AAAAAAAAFSc/JECnT-C9S_4/s1600/P1000224.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L9oIEixBKRk/Vg3jE0xGBNI/AAAAAAAAFSc/JECnT-C9S_4/s320/P1000224.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We were just sitting on the sand when suddenly Fran had an idea...</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ordC3A2yQS8/Vg3jNfTqKNI/AAAAAAAAFSk/eC-T6peYXek/s1600/P1000226.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ordC3A2yQS8/Vg3jNfTqKNI/AAAAAAAAFSk/eC-T6peYXek/s320/P1000226.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">She was inspired by the light shining through a water bottle on the sand, creating a beautiful green shadow. We added other objects to make different kinds of shadows on the sand. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pi8q7DlC60c/Vg3jYsMA8eI/AAAAAAAAFSs/6_LsP9WFUMw/s1600/P1000231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pi8q7DlC60c/Vg3jYsMA8eI/AAAAAAAAFSs/6_LsP9WFUMw/s320/P1000231.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We also sculpted the sand with our fingers to make patterns that would enhance the effect of the shadows. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gHdSzGUK7rM/Vg3jdNpSBcI/AAAAAAAAFS0/fIzZ-g4l6E0/s1600/P1000231a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gHdSzGUK7rM/Vg3jdNpSBcI/AAAAAAAAFS0/fIzZ-g4l6E0/s320/P1000231a.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This installation was different than other FEH installations because it was not the objects themselves that made the artwork, but the shadows of the objects. Fran and I took a bunch of pictures to record the piece, created by light and dark on a sand canvas.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oXmRbBrrPYw/Vg3jjt5f1zI/AAAAAAAAFS8/aJvmCF2HwhQ/s1600/P1000246.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oXmRbBrrPYw/Vg3jjt5f1zI/AAAAAAAAFS8/aJvmCF2HwhQ/s320/P1000246.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Later, we removed the bottles, but the shadows were still beautiful. I continued to take pictures. I really like this one. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ldzMKDZwv3o/Vg3jwH12s1I/AAAAAAAAFTE/bAhNNiiZfZA/s1600/P1000239.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ldzMKDZwv3o/Vg3jwH12s1I/AAAAAAAAFTE/bAhNNiiZfZA/s320/P1000239.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then we realized we had a problem. How would we sign our installation? We usually use some of the materials we have been working with to make the letters F, E and H in some corner of our work. But this time we were working with shadows! Not easy. Then we got an idea. We stood beside each other and decided to sign our installation with our own shadows somehow. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uUVj7-ykMmI/Vg3j1lLVgvI/AAAAAAAAFTM/6Q6wUHwL4iM/s1600/P1000242a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uUVj7-ykMmI/Vg3j1lLVgvI/AAAAAAAAFTM/6Q6wUHwL4iM/s320/P1000242a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Like kids playing with flashlights at night, we decided to use our fingers to make shadows of our initials on the sand. So in this picture, Fran is on the left with two fingers making an "F", I am in the middle with three fingers making an "E" (and trying to hold my camera at the same time), and Holly has made a fabulous "H" on the right. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>FEH</b> strikes again! </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-86069923658544627392015-09-22T19:16:00.000-07:002015-09-22T19:16:45.564-07:00Summer Painting<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W7qAfvwxe3o/VgIBLink2XI/AAAAAAAAFRo/aweM1R8mtQs/s1600/P1000137b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W7qAfvwxe3o/VgIBLink2XI/AAAAAAAAFRo/aweM1R8mtQs/s320/P1000137b.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It has been a good summer for painting. Inspired by a walk in Voyageur Provincial Park in June, I started this painting and worked on it when I could throughout the summer months. I still have changes to make, but have decided to let it sit for a while, think about it, and finish it later. It has been a lot of fun to work on. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SfJPOjYMRrk/VgIF1gGlbOI/AAAAAAAAFR0/Cc06cb53nCk/s1600/P1000141b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SfJPOjYMRrk/VgIF1gGlbOI/AAAAAAAAFR0/Cc06cb53nCk/s320/P1000141b.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My studio is unheated so I can only work when it is warm enough. I started another painting quite recently to make use of the late summer days. I hope we have a sunny and pleasant autumn so I can continue to paint for another month or two. This painting is already starting to be fun to work on, too!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-1093747190354197412015-09-15T19:27:00.001-07:002015-09-15T19:27:57.242-07:00The Annual Fall Festival in Dunvegan Ontario<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Every year, I go to the Annual Fall Festival at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan, Ontario. So last Sunday (September 13), I kept up the tradition and went even though it had been a very rainy day. Despite the soggy weather I had fun! Lots of good food, music, animals, activities and people wearing pioneer costumes. I was taking a picture of the town crier when he came over and handed me his bell. My friend Mac took a picture of the town crier and me, holding the bell (I didn't want to ring it because then people would think I had something to announce!). </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GYh0rgfLTVY/VfjMe8KmC7I/AAAAAAAAFQc/eEn9y6JFUEg/s1600/P1000164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GYh0rgfLTVY/VfjMe8KmC7I/AAAAAAAAFQc/eEn9y6JFUEg/s320/P1000164.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The music was appropriately down-home-y and old fashioned, like the music out of the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". These guys were really good - playing banjo, mandolin and guitar. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xmGi6YAgnJ0/VfjMj9uTCfI/AAAAAAAAFQk/aX-3h34ZRbQ/s1600/P1000172.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xmGi6YAgnJ0/VfjMj9uTCfI/AAAAAAAAFQk/aX-3h34ZRbQ/s320/P1000172.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There were sheep. These guys were waiting their turn....</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7NOlgBlKQP0/VfjM6qLfsuI/AAAAAAAAFQs/opN6aknpODY/s1600/P1000174.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7NOlgBlKQP0/VfjM6qLfsuI/AAAAAAAAFQs/opN6aknpODY/s320/P1000174.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">...because there was sheep-sheering exhibition, and they were next. This guy was a pro at sheering sheep. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyCEWR73FME/VfjM_XfWB1I/AAAAAAAAFQ0/kQum-tksqSU/s1600/P1000176a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyCEWR73FME/VfjM_XfWB1I/AAAAAAAAFQ0/kQum-tksqSU/s320/P1000176a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Nearby there was a man giving a demonstration on rope-making. He had a special machine to do this. It was fascinating to watch. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KL4DTWv8PZo/VfjNO4MI39I/AAAAAAAAFQ8/ISCfm1cuCqo/s1600/P1000178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KL4DTWv8PZo/VfjNO4MI39I/AAAAAAAAFQ8/ISCfm1cuCqo/s320/P1000178.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There were a number of roosters in cages. I missed the rooster-crowing contest, but it was nice just to see the roosters in all their glory. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There were also chickens. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ZjG4bvt3SM/VfjNa99A8hI/AAAAAAAAFRM/tLPBPQffQ5s/s1600/P1000183a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6ZjG4bvt3SM/VfjNa99A8hI/AAAAAAAAFRM/tLPBPQffQ5s/s320/P1000183a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The blacksmith was hard at work at his forge. This was a very popular exhibition. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bmNjImkUSRY/VfjNe60nkbI/AAAAAAAAFRU/BaoPNDsD3VI/s1600/P1000185a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bmNjImkUSRY/VfjNe60nkbI/AAAAAAAAFRU/BaoPNDsD3VI/s320/P1000185a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And finally, there was more music. The fiddler was dynamite. Altogether, a fun day and worth slogging through a few puddles to enjoy. </span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7SZ_LS9v9JY/VdvL8m-LNAI/AAAAAAAAFN8/EUiRkjKtNRs/s1600/P1000130b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7SZ_LS9v9JY/VdvL8m-LNAI/AAAAAAAAFN8/EUiRkjKtNRs/s320/P1000130b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This past Sunday, I went to a wonderful late August party. My friends Susan and Vlasta held the party at their beautiful place in the country. People sat near the pond for a while and soaked up the gorgeous evening. It was one of those times where you realized summer was coming to an end but we were happy just enjoying what was left of it. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q0BNVG0S21g/VdvL_aAD68I/AAAAAAAAFOE/tvqwTbkc0Bw/s1600/P1000128a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q0BNVG0S21g/VdvL_aAD68I/AAAAAAAAFOE/tvqwTbkc0Bw/s320/P1000128a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then it was time to eat. Susan and Mac got ready to barbecue burgers and boil dozens and dozens of cobs of corn for the hungry masses. Mmmm! It was yummy! Food always tastes so good outside on a late summer evening. </span><br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ioG9Fd9BcJs/VcFvGqyfMTI/AAAAAAAAFLM/lCcERCLjvG0/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B032a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ioG9Fd9BcJs/VcFvGqyfMTI/AAAAAAAAFLM/lCcERCLjvG0/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B032a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last Saturday, my friend Lisa and I went to a concert in a barn which turned out to be a truly magical experience. This was held at By Chadsey's Cairns Winery, Prince Edward County, by the shores of Lake Ontario. As the brochure advertising the concert said, there was "wine, food, hay bales, and light streaming through the barn boards." </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ebZk92ah6Zc/VcFvutihZwI/AAAAAAAAFLU/8SrCzmvKGFM/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ebZk92ah6Zc/VcFvutihZwI/AAAAAAAAFLU/8SrCzmvKGFM/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B034.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took a shot of the exterior of the barn because I really liked the way you could see through, to the opening on the other side. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ou0DiqW1yMo/VcFwHm40qrI/AAAAAAAAFLc/0gPJWvzHd7k/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ou0DiqW1yMo/VcFwHm40qrI/AAAAAAAAFLc/0gPJWvzHd7k/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B036.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Across from the barn, there was a wine store that sold wine made from the grapes growing in the fields behind. Lisa and I tasted a couple of different wines before purchasing some bottles - white for Lisa and red for me. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-175NRgtp9bA/VcFwdLtZxkI/AAAAAAAAFLk/7lBUAdU_U8I/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B049a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-175NRgtp9bA/VcFwdLtZxkI/AAAAAAAAFLk/7lBUAdU_U8I/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B049a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Before the concert, we sat outside overlooking the vineyard and drank some of the delicious red we had chosen. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RW-6NZnOy8k/VcFw9cTyn2I/AAAAAAAAFLs/ys8fixypMIA/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RW-6NZnOy8k/VcFw9cTyn2I/AAAAAAAAFLs/ys8fixypMIA/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B053.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We were served a meal by an Ottawa chef named Jonathan Korecki, from Restaurant 18 in the Byward Market. These appetisers were really yummy!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nWVycARnPM8/VcFxR4RsE4I/AAAAAAAAFL0/eipN0qQB9io/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B039a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nWVycARnPM8/VcFxR4RsE4I/AAAAAAAAFL0/eipN0qQB9io/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B039a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then it was time to go into the barn for the concert. I loved this cathedral-like view of one wall, with all the light coming in through the boards. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iQsvvmMeoig/VcFxltupfHI/AAAAAAAAFL8/qpxkeH0rNvA/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B057a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iQsvvmMeoig/VcFxltupfHI/AAAAAAAAFL8/qpxkeH0rNvA/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B057a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The musicians were all members of the National Arts Centre orchestra. Here is Michelle Gott, the harp soloist, warming up. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-128F0BDwJvY/VcFxxK-upWI/AAAAAAAAFME/wGpI5Lrhzw0/s1600/August%2B4%2B2015%2B059a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-128F0BDwJvY/VcFxxK-upWI/AAAAAAAAFME/wGpI5Lrhzw0/s320/August%2B4%2B2015%2B059a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There were three other musicians from the NAC orchestra. In this picture, Yosuke Kawasaki, concertmaster, and Joanna G'froerer, principle flute, are playing Beethoven's Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola (I couldn't get Jessica Linnebach, the viola player, in the picture). It doesn't get any better than this - music, food and wine on a magical summer evening. </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-69638495692013380952015-07-14T18:17:00.000-07:002015-07-14T18:17:22.566-07:00Playing With My New Camera<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0sVuUSZ2OeY/VaWtUTXkUaI/AAAAAAAAFKQ/hAzVGhn_-vM/s1600/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B028a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="244" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0sVuUSZ2OeY/VaWtUTXkUaI/AAAAAAAAFKQ/hAzVGhn_-vM/s320/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B028a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Alas, the camera I have been using for many years died recently. I replaced it with a newer, fancier, and more technically enhanced camera, and then set out to see what kinds of things it could do. It has a lot of bells and whistles that I haven't mastered yet, but in the couple of weeks since I bought it, I have had a lot of fun playing with it. I took this pic when I was at the Ottawa Jazz Festival at the end of June. Those sax players really cooked!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5qNqp0uyORg/VaWtwD5VJ7I/AAAAAAAAFKY/JIaCe27MbSg/s1600/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5qNqp0uyORg/VaWtwD5VJ7I/AAAAAAAAFKY/JIaCe27MbSg/s320/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B019.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The new camera takes better close-ups than the old one. This is a picture of some Oenothera (also called Sundrops, or Evening Primrose) in my garden. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X3f02z-ULGU/VaWt9KHwv5I/AAAAAAAAFKg/tFxx3JZUv4c/s1600/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B031a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X3f02z-ULGU/VaWt9KHwv5I/AAAAAAAAFKg/tFxx3JZUv4c/s320/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B031a.jpg" width="221" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I went to Toronto to visit family shortly after getting my new camera. I took this picture of my granddaughter asleep in her stroller when we went to an ice cream parlour for a treat. She looks so completely relaxed!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M0-YZi-0dpU/VaWvXQUnM4I/AAAAAAAAFKs/1D5kdwiDJIw/s1600/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M0-YZi-0dpU/VaWvXQUnM4I/AAAAAAAAFKs/1D5kdwiDJIw/s320/July%2B14%252C%2B2015%2B039.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This picture was taken in the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. I was a long way away from these people so tried the zoom function to take this pic. I wanted to capture their relaxed human gestures in the stark, industrial setting of the gallery. Everything around them is so abstract, except for the poster for the Chagall show (which was quite good, by the way). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I have a lot to learn about my new camera, but so far I am happy with it. </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-630256700147306202015-06-18T20:12:00.000-07:002015-06-18T20:12:06.145-07:00FEH's First "Installation in the Woods" for 2015<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IN83Vb10eqY/VYN2ysaMUVI/AAAAAAAAFJA/Dqb-6olRwHI/s1600/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B008a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IN83Vb10eqY/VYN2ysaMUVI/AAAAAAAAFJA/Dqb-6olRwHI/s320/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B008a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last Saturday, I got together with my friends Fran and Holly to make a site-specific installation in the woods. We had done this several times last year and really enjoyed the results. We called ourselves FEH, for Fran, Evlyn, and Holly. So as FEH, we decided to meet again this past weekend to create our first installation of this year.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RBsZcg1QgNw/VYN3JV9Ou8I/AAAAAAAAFJI/3wLUHJJEXxs/s1600/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B005a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RBsZcg1QgNw/VYN3JV9Ou8I/AAAAAAAAFJI/3wLUHJJEXxs/s320/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B005a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We decided we wanted to do a "painting" so we picked a huge rock with a flat top on which to lay our colours down, using found materials. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HOP96IqHfxU/VYN3id6NUHI/AAAAAAAAFJQ/ISwYr0r4MLo/s1600/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B031a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HOP96IqHfxU/VYN3id6NUHI/AAAAAAAAFJQ/ISwYr0r4MLo/s320/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B031a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then we started to "paint" with bark, stones, pinecones, moss, twigs, broken glass - anything we found that had colour and could add to the shape and design. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QddkQwnmANo/VYN3wuvzQRI/AAAAAAAAFJY/KUp5Nn5UHm0/s1600/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B009a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QddkQwnmANo/VYN3wuvzQRI/AAAAAAAAFJY/KUp5Nn5UHm0/s320/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B009a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It involved a lot of decision-making and precision putting the elements in place, just like any painting does. In this picture, Fran is carefully placing pinecones down in patterns. It was interesting that we each favoured different materials to work with - I mostly used rocks, Holly was really into sticks and twigs, and Fran focussed on pinecones and bark. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sd1u6PAKxIA/VYN4RzFq6AI/AAAAAAAAFJg/us7lpoodyC8/s1600/20150613_150523b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sd1u6PAKxIA/VYN4RzFq6AI/AAAAAAAAFJg/us7lpoodyC8/s320/20150613_150523b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After about an hour, it had taken shape. We started to finesse the elements, getting excited when something really "worked". We were also in awe of the colours we managed to find in these natural, found materials - the green moss was gorgeous, the red bark added a pop of colour, and we wanted to make sure that the blue-greys of the rock showed through. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6-cCuFOh0bs/VYN4ljTQbbI/AAAAAAAAFJo/uD2fFNZEFK4/s1600/20150613_150543a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6-cCuFOh0bs/VYN4ljTQbbI/AAAAAAAAFJo/uD2fFNZEFK4/s320/20150613_150543a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Walking around the rock afterward, we had fun seeing the patterns and colours of the painting from different angles. There was no problem with "up" or "down" on this painting. It was interesting no matter where you stood in relation to the rock. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3EspFK8RtrI/VYN6KINukJI/AAAAAAAAFJ0/wXI1mrdBkA8/s1600/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B016a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3EspFK8RtrI/VYN6KINukJI/AAAAAAAAFJ0/wXI1mrdBkA8/s320/June%2B16%252C%2B2015%2B016a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And of course, like all artists, we signed our work at the end. Then we left, with our eyes opened to all the colours around us in the forest, after this art-installation in the woods. </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-37065638192659253892015-06-10T20:15:00.000-07:002015-06-10T20:15:54.231-07:00The Story of a White Apple<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hwlgTTjSGOk/VXjzjo7N7TI/AAAAAAAAFHk/hqZG63tlZBU/s1600/img410a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hwlgTTjSGOk/VXjzjo7N7TI/AAAAAAAAFHk/hqZG63tlZBU/s320/img410a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once upon a time, there were three white apples. They were installed in the River Gallery Sculpture Garden in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1993. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bTwzGDYrC3c/VXjzue03WNI/AAAAAAAAFHs/LkjSp7ltUs8/s1600/img127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bTwzGDYrC3c/VXjzue03WNI/AAAAAAAAFHs/LkjSp7ltUs8/s320/img127.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">They were made by the sculptor Peter MacElwain. In this picture, he is putting the final touches on the apples after they had been set up in the sculpture garden. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GecaJQeW1bw/VXjz4W01tuI/AAAAAAAAFH0/YS9pRm4DCI4/s1600/img411a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GecaJQeW1bw/VXjz4W01tuI/AAAAAAAAFH0/YS9pRm4DCI4/s320/img411a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I helped Peter install the apples in the sculpture garden. It was fun taking them to Tennessee and setting them up. Two of them were sold to collectors and the third lived with me and Peter at our home in Lefaivre Ontario. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1fro6xfxmCk/VXj0Ss9AHVI/AAAAAAAAFH8/zt0pETxJRwY/s1600/June%2B9%2B2015%2B010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1fro6xfxmCk/VXj0Ss9AHVI/AAAAAAAAFH8/zt0pETxJRwY/s320/June%2B9%2B2015%2B010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many years passed. Peter died in 2001 and I tried to take care of the sculptures of his I still had left (most were purchased by collectors). Despite my efforts, the remaining white apple deteriorated after years of sitting on my front yard. It lost its stem and needed some minor repairs, a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Then this year, I was invited to show the white apple at a sculpture garden in St. Eugene Ontario. The owner of the sculpture garden, Nik Schnell, did the needed repairs, attached the new stem, and set the apple up beautifully on the grounds. As you can see, I was very happy with the beautiful restoration of this white apple. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6SlZxHlu8gY/VXj0i2A1bmI/AAAAAAAAFIE/-aWPtI4uw6k/s1600/Alex%2BSchnell%2527s%2BProm%2BVCI%2B2015%2Bby%2BNik%2BSchnell%2B%25283%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6SlZxHlu8gY/VXj0i2A1bmI/AAAAAAAAFIE/-aWPtI4uw6k/s320/Alex%2BSchnell%2527s%2BProm%2BVCI%2B2015%2Bby%2BNik%2BSchnell%2B%25283%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Everyone who sees the white apple loves it. Nik sent this picture to me just the other day. It shows his son Alex with his girlfriend Amber, getting their picture taken before they went to their graduation prom. Love the contrast of white and black, especially Amber's black dress and white purse, beside the white apple. This is a particularly lovely picture for me because Alex's mother (Nik's wife) died just this past April. But an apple is a symbol of life and hope and fulfillment, so it is nice to see Alex and his girlfriend beside it. Peter would have been so happy to see this!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-84142289596667361362015-05-25T21:05:00.001-07:002015-05-25T21:05:30.436-07:00Garden Sculpture Show 2015 - Philippa's Garden at the Skelly Gallery<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This past Sunday, May 24th 2015, was the vernissage of the 3rd Garden Sculpture Show at Philippa's Garden at the Skelly Gallery in St. Eugene, Ontario. It was a perfect day for wandering through the garden and looking at the many wonderful sculptures in the show. At the heart of the garden is the <em>Homage</em> by my late husband, Peter MacElwain. It has been a favourite for people going to this annual event for the past three years. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-89yvZO1g9AU/VWPhPLYvVwI/AAAAAAAAFFE/_k0OnEN0Zbo/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B016a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-89yvZO1g9AU/VWPhPLYvVwI/AAAAAAAAFFE/_k0OnEN0Zbo/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B016a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This fun piece, which is set up near the Gallery, is by a sculptor named John McCabe. Great use of materials. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YJeUxvb-yuI/VWPhdCSdWeI/AAAAAAAAFFM/YoqPCLCnkb8/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B086a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YJeUxvb-yuI/VWPhdCSdWeI/AAAAAAAAFFM/YoqPCLCnkb8/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B086a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There were several sculptures that hung from trees, like this bright and whimsical piece by Susan Jephcott. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D3FT6N3L43c/VWPhq89EekI/AAAAAAAAFFU/J9wYtndOORw/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B019a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D3FT6N3L43c/VWPhq89EekI/AAAAAAAAFFU/J9wYtndOORw/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B019a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dody Dines showed her beautiful tile pots, with lots of plants and vegetation - perfect for a spring day in the garden. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Eqgcnz0w3xY/VWPiCUcyv0I/AAAAAAAAFFc/1l8ReRSHozo/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B062a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Eqgcnz0w3xY/VWPiCUcyv0I/AAAAAAAAFFc/1l8ReRSHozo/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B062a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is one of my favourite pieces, by Lis Skelly. It was tucked away among some trees and seemed to be looking out shyly. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_KmORTuAUFM/VWPiisFVZiI/AAAAAAAAFFk/RtTSMFfc8Ps/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B027a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_KmORTuAUFM/VWPiisFVZiI/AAAAAAAAFFk/RtTSMFfc8Ps/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B027a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This piece, by Nik Schnell (who runs the gallery and sculpture garden), was also tucked away among some trees. It is a very intriguing piece and viewers can see themselves reflected in the mirror that makes the "face" of the sculpture. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n0Nhi9eruGw/VWPi3korRAI/AAAAAAAAFFs/N_aRBgYR6hc/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n0Nhi9eruGw/VWPi3korRAI/AAAAAAAAFFs/N_aRBgYR6hc/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B069.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Further along in the garden, there were 6 pieces by Bernard Gauthier. Some of them were positive cut-outs, like this.....</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DBqfkraQZr0/VWPjJtwN8kI/AAAAAAAAFF0/2oz3JfMGR00/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DBqfkraQZr0/VWPjJtwN8kI/AAAAAAAAFF0/2oz3JfMGR00/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B071.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.....and some of them were negative cut-outs, like this. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-01BDyte9EyA/VWPjdrFTP8I/AAAAAAAAFF8/_QFVgyngxJE/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-01BDyte9EyA/VWPjdrFTP8I/AAAAAAAAFF8/_QFVgyngxJE/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B032.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My friend, David, had some fun with one of the negative cut-outs....</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tWoyQBFxV-o/VWPj4AV4HfI/AAAAAAAAFGE/FlUS8TCR-Hs/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tWoyQBFxV-o/VWPj4AV4HfI/AAAAAAAAFGE/FlUS8TCR-Hs/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B035.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.....while Holly had fun with one of the positive cut-outs. Wonderfully silly!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mucsFB4ZQaI/VWPktOgvRVI/AAAAAAAAFGM/Gm3CeBUPWR0/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B045a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mucsFB4ZQaI/VWPktOgvRVI/AAAAAAAAFGM/Gm3CeBUPWR0/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B045a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Two artists, Adele Reeves and Lisa Livingston, made this fabulous curtain of hundreds of fabric shapes that hung from some trees on the path through the garden. It was magical walking through the gap in the middle. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JmfIU_C_FsA/VWPlP776sGI/AAAAAAAAFGU/T5kw9tGgRaM/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B049b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JmfIU_C_FsA/VWPlP776sGI/AAAAAAAAFGU/T5kw9tGgRaM/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B049b.jpg" width="269" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is another piece by John McCabe. Love all the colour. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FhXEK-GnQrs/VWPl5TR1rbI/AAAAAAAAFGc/6v5b7IOtwbE/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B050a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FhXEK-GnQrs/VWPl5TR1rbI/AAAAAAAAFGc/6v5b7IOtwbE/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B050a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These fun pieces by Kathryn Harvey can be turned around, so one can see the faces.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OSmeywm6xcg/VWPmS492xiI/AAAAAAAAFGk/Kok9XvLTdnY/s1600/May%2B25%2B2015%2B009a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OSmeywm6xcg/VWPmS492xiI/AAAAAAAAFGk/Kok9XvLTdnY/s320/May%2B25%2B2015%2B009a.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For me, the most important piece in the show is this apple sculpture, <em>White Cortland</em>, by Peter MacElwain. This was very recently restored and it was exciting to show it again after many, many years. I was so very happy that people were enjoying it in its full glory. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Great show - wonderful day!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-15905423610121766072015-05-12T20:26:00.001-07:002015-05-12T20:26:34.137-07:00A Different Kind of White Carpet<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I walk past this small garden of trees every day. In the winter, they are bare and dark and the ground underneath their branches is covered with a white carpet of snow. Today, spring is at its height and there was another kind of white carpet on the ground under the branches - a carpet of white petals that had fallen from the flowering trees. Enchanting!</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-45330812818905484952015-05-04T20:04:00.000-07:002015-05-04T20:04:44.737-07:00Spring Rituals<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4OH9D2cJeVs/VUgt1XjUe6I/AAAAAAAAFDA/mCySR5kjcjM/s1600/May%2B4%2B2015%2B061a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4OH9D2cJeVs/VUgt1XjUe6I/AAAAAAAAFDA/mCySR5kjcjM/s320/May%2B4%2B2015%2B061a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Every year about this time, after all the snow is gone and the lovely warm weather returns, I engage in certain spring rituals. The first ritual involves dragging out my ancient geriatric lawnmower and wondering, "Will the poor old thing still work? Or will this be the year it refuses to go, and I have to say goodbye and get a new lawnmower?" So I pulled it out last Saturday, filled it up with fuel, and gave its starting cord a couple of yanks. Lo and behold, it coughed into life!!! Amazing! This lawnmower is now about 23 years old and I can't believe that it still works! </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1V7f6ozaHH8/VUgt9Gx1eNI/AAAAAAAAFDI/kDCQN28d2Q4/s1600/May%2B4%2B2015%2B063a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1V7f6ozaHH8/VUgt9Gx1eNI/AAAAAAAAFDI/kDCQN28d2Q4/s320/May%2B4%2B2015%2B063a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was thinking of calling this post "Something Old, Something New". The lawnmower is really old, but I got some brand new duckies to wear when I pushed her around the yard and worked in the garden. Aren't they great? </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pm_p8f7y8PM/VUguGE6w56I/AAAAAAAAFDQ/df_ZQKGLusQ/s1600/May%2B4%2B2015%2B059a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pm_p8f7y8PM/VUguGE6w56I/AAAAAAAAFDQ/df_ZQKGLusQ/s320/May%2B4%2B2015%2B059a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another spring ritual is, of course, cleaning up my garden and appreciating the emerging flowers. After the horribly cold January, February and March we had here in Eastern Ontario, these crocuses, my first flowers, are even more welcome than usual. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wDG6mjJ3ZcA/VUguNTJCh_I/AAAAAAAAFDY/f6mLSlQN8q0/s1600/May%2B4%2B2015%2B065a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wDG6mjJ3ZcA/VUguNTJCh_I/AAAAAAAAFDY/f6mLSlQN8q0/s320/May%2B4%2B2015%2B065a.jpg" width="258" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And, about this time of year, the garden centres open and one of my spring rituals is getting tempted by all kinds of beautiful plants. I passed a garden centre when I was shopping on Saturday and told myself to behave, not go in and buy anything yet. But I couldn't resist these gorgeous red Dianthus. Thank goodness for warm, sunny days and gardening and old lawnmowers that still work! </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-54314321667946564122015-03-28T08:58:00.000-07:002015-03-28T09:17:58.241-07:00Long Ago and Far Away...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x_efS3jiKmk/VRbLF4Sbh6I/AAAAAAAAFCg/FMa1LrfRG2c/s1600/img406a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x_efS3jiKmk/VRbLF4Sbh6I/AAAAAAAAFCg/FMa1LrfRG2c/s1600/img406a.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Recently, I found this memento of a very happy time in my life. Several months after Peter and I began living together, we took a trip to Paris (I actually <u>won</u> this trip, but that's another story). While we were there, we got some photos taken so that we could get a transit pass in order to take the subway and buses all over Paris. (The transit pass was called a Carte d'Orange - I still remember that). We got our pictures taken at a place called ARC & TYPES (57, Bd de Grenelle, 75015, Paris), and they gave us the photos in this little paper folder with their name printed on the front. I have kept this little folder in a box for many, many years and rediscovered it recently while culling through stuff, doing one of my "do I need to keep this anymore" purges. There it was, with my picture showing through a window in the folder. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--OsD_nZFU7I/VRbLRgD-qiI/AAAAAAAAFCo/kBPCj5a33pw/s1600/img409a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--OsD_nZFU7I/VRbLRgD-qiI/AAAAAAAAFCo/kBPCj5a33pw/s1600/img409a.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Opening the little paper folder, I found a real treat - two of my pictures and two of Peter's. I think the black and white picture of Peter was a Canadian Passport photo. Wow - we were so young. And I love the setup of our four pics in four little boxes. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These pics were taken in 1992 - thirteen years ago. Those were the days, my friend....</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-89620335703021042042015-02-26T18:04:00.000-08:002015-02-26T18:04:37.511-08:00A Bit of Fun Saying Goodbye to February 2015<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4kanBstHB0/VO_LYqkGIPI/AAAAAAAAFBI/i4URagex5T8/s1600/IMG_7538a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4kanBstHB0/VO_LYqkGIPI/AAAAAAAAFBI/i4URagex5T8/s1600/IMG_7538a.jpg" height="320" width="202" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Like many - probably most - people in the Ottawa area, I will be so, so, so happy to see an end to the month of February. It was one of the coldest, most awful Februaries I remember, and it has made life miserable for a lot of people. To celebrate the fact that this horrible month is ending in 2 days, I got together with some colleagues of mine at work today and we made a poster to allow everyone to say goodbye to February.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gd9mhzAAWQM/VO_LgvkP_yI/AAAAAAAAFBQ/pFldHBzOAIA/s1600/IMG_7533a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gd9mhzAAWQM/VO_LgvkP_yI/AAAAAAAAFBQ/pFldHBzOAIA/s1600/IMG_7533a.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My co-worker Heather and I drew nasty old man February on a couple of big pieces of paper and hung it on a wall in the hallway where lots of people could see it. Then other people wrote their comments to say goodbye. This is my colleague Aakelah giving her thoughts on what a yucky month it was. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1gtZaedMWGs/VO_LqvWmjbI/AAAAAAAAFBY/u-Mtv4ZsLkc/s1600/IMG_7540a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1gtZaedMWGs/VO_LqvWmjbI/AAAAAAAAFBY/u-Mtv4ZsLkc/s1600/IMG_7540a.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Heather drew a really ugly face and I coloured his eyes and we had a lot of fun. Heather wrote down that the average daily temperature in February was -16.3 degrees C in Ottawa. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J3rty0QLRxY/VO_Lz4q6NQI/AAAAAAAAFBg/vVT6DbzSFiI/s1600/IMG_7539a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J3rty0QLRxY/VO_Lz4q6NQI/AAAAAAAAFBg/vVT6DbzSFiI/s1600/IMG_7539a.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was a hit with people in our office. They all felt better after venting their feelings about how awful the month had been. I drew the word February with icicles hanging off the letters. Somebody wrote "Die, February, Die!" underneath. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">So - Goodbye February 2015, and good riddance. Hope we never see such a horrible month like this, ever again! </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-59886475539059348312015-02-06T12:41:00.000-08:002015-02-06T12:41:47.919-08:00Very Unusual Sighting in the City<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E-cRCfYjQ8c/VNUk69jKNII/AAAAAAAAFA0/ETscUJOsVzk/s1600/February%2B6%2B2015%2B011b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E-cRCfYjQ8c/VNUk69jKNII/AAAAAAAAFA0/ETscUJOsVzk/s1600/February%2B6%2B2015%2B011b.jpg" height="254" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was startling to see this magnificent creature outside the window of my apartment in the city. My apartment is right downtown - I mean, you can't get more downtown than it is, a few steps away from the Byward Market and the National Art Gallery and the Houses of Parliament. It is very common to see hawks at my place in the country, but not here in the city. Definitely a first - and very exciting! So I took a picture and then looked up hawks to see what kind it is. I think it might be a Sharp-Shinned Hawk, or maybe a Broad-shouldered Hawk, or maybe...I am really not sure. Any ideas?</span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-18896085846077602002015-01-20T19:47:00.000-08:002015-01-20T19:47:30.660-08:00Coping With the Cold<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_V4kV9H5uk8/VL8dSJPZ0GI/AAAAAAAAFAg/f9TWtM7NKbc/s1600/snowman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_V4kV9H5uk8/VL8dSJPZ0GI/AAAAAAAAFAg/f9TWtM7NKbc/s1600/snowman.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It has been so cold for most of January, that I have sought things to cheer myself up and make this cold and dark month more endurable. One day, when I was walking through the Byward Market in Ottawa, I saw this cute little snowman that someone had built in a courtyard. He was so cheerful, he brightened my day. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKggHZp942Y/VL8c1noAQ0I/AAAAAAAAFAQ/NyYWrKYpR0U/s1600/January%2B20%2B2015%2B021a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKggHZp942Y/VL8c1noAQ0I/AAAAAAAAFAQ/NyYWrKYpR0U/s1600/January%2B20%2B2015%2B021a.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another way I overcome the dreary cold is by buying myself a bright bouquet of flowers. Love the yellows and reds. Ahhh! It makes me think of spring, when flowers will be growing in the gardens again. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xVxYDvyQsgc/VL8c76LIKHI/AAAAAAAAFAY/k2XcYi_9EfE/s1600/January%2B20%2B2015%2B032a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xVxYDvyQsgc/VL8c76LIKHI/AAAAAAAAFAY/k2XcYi_9EfE/s1600/January%2B20%2B2015%2B032a.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Most winter evenings recently have been just too cold to go out for a walk. So I cheer myself up by sitting down with a bunch of coloured pencils and scribbling a drawing. Nothing serious - just for fun, just to put down a bunch of bright colours on a piece of paper. Another way to dream of spring, another way of coping with winter. </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-28310661989066970052014-12-14T18:29:00.000-08:002014-12-14T18:29:12.749-08:00Light Effects - City and Country<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Gu8KrK3uNl0/VI5CYcsJE8I/AAAAAAAAE_k/wbNhRK8Scag/s1600/December%2B14%2B2014%2B008b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Gu8KrK3uNl0/VI5CYcsJE8I/AAAAAAAAE_k/wbNhRK8Scag/s1600/December%2B14%2B2014%2B008b.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When walking around the city recently, I have been finding wonderful light displays that have been installed to celebrate the season. Like this configuration of decorated trees in a little courtyard. They looked like strange creatures from outer space, or under the sea, waving their arms and dancing. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HPJ4BUm66PM/VI5CnUbLu5I/AAAAAAAAE_s/s7dm1D14p8g/s1600/December%2B14%2B2014%2B014a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HPJ4BUm66PM/VI5CnUbLu5I/AAAAAAAAE_s/s7dm1D14p8g/s1600/December%2B14%2B2014%2B014a.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In another courtyard a few streets over, I found another set of trees decorated with lights. But this time, they were red and green instead of blue. These ones looked like tall thin creatures stretching their arms. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O7CD8cf1cR4/VI5C9R_r_nI/AAAAAAAAE_0/oO2vZns42Jc/s1600/December%2B14%2B2014%2B039a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O7CD8cf1cR4/VI5C9R_r_nI/AAAAAAAAE_0/oO2vZns42Jc/s1600/December%2B14%2B2014%2B039a.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The light effects I have seen in the country have been quite different. They were not man-made but rather caused by beautiful sunsets and the lovely evening light on the new fallen snow. Truly gorgeous! </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-935972991055021060.post-34389017258796676932014-12-07T19:32:00.000-08:002014-12-07T19:36:14.557-08:00Full Moon in City and Country<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UU6Bh7po-ow/VIUWboRLitI/AAAAAAAAE_M/DiY9qDDV5gM/s1600/December%2B7%2B2014%2B011a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UU6Bh7po-ow/VIUWboRLitI/AAAAAAAAE_M/DiY9qDDV5gM/s1600/December%2B7%2B2014%2B011a.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We had a full moon this past week. I took this photo of the moon when I was in the city, at dusk just as it was becoming visible. It somehow seemed appropriate that it would be framed by the very industrial-looking structure of the bridge - the moon in an urban setting. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQuyJyvneDg/VIUW4KGCI6I/AAAAAAAAE_U/sjlRqEQC0BM/s1600/December%2B7%2B2014%2B020a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IQuyJyvneDg/VIUW4KGCI6I/AAAAAAAAE_U/sjlRqEQC0BM/s1600/December%2B7%2B2014%2B020a.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In contrast, when I took a photo of the full moon from the back yard of my home in the country a day later, it was framed by trees and a long silver jet trail. Very appropriate to the country setting. </span>Evlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119886070700514303noreply@blogger.com1
